In their own words, “Swell is an impact investing platform that helps you invest in high-growth companies solving global challenges.” Swell allows you to invest in a custom, personal mix of thematic portfolios. You can choose to divide your investment between these six areas:
- Green Technology
- Renewable Energy
- Zero Waste
- Clean Water
- Healthy Living
- Disease Eradication
While each portfolio contains a variety of individual funds, you can remove up to 3 holdings from any portfolio if you’d rather not invest in a specific company. Swell investors are shareholders of the companies in their portfolios, which means that they are able to vote on shareholder resolutions and even attend annual meetings if they care to.
At the moment, Swell provides individual taxable brokerage accounts and Traditional, Roth, and SEP IRAs with more account types coming soon.
Because Swell is regulated by the SEC like any other investment, you will be required to provide the following to open your account:
- Social Security Number
- Date of Birth
- Citizenship/residency status
- Employment status
Additionally, Swell will ask about your current investment assets, risk tolerance, and investment time horizon in order to determine suitability for investing in Swell and to meet SEC reporting requirements.
Swell’s broker-dealer/custodian, Folio, is a member of FINRA and SIPC and your securities are protected up to $500,000.
Swell does not charge any fees to withdraw funds or close your account and can be linked directly to checking and/or savings accounts for easy opening deposit and to receive funds when you sell an investment or close your account.
